Dee’s Hope story
Living with osteoarthritis can be incredibly challenging, especially when it affects your ability to enjoy daily activities.
Dee, a full-time personal assistant, knows this all too well. After being diagnosed with osteoarthritis in both knees and placed on a waiting list for surgery, she found her life becoming increasingly limited. However, Dee's story is one of resilience and hope, thanks to the transformative Hope Programme.
In 2017, Dee's journey with osteoarthritis began with her first x-ray. As her condition progressed, it impacted various aspects of her life, causing her to become more reclusive despite working full-time. Recognizing the need for support, Dee's elective care manager recommended the Hope Programme—a course designed to help individuals rebuild confidence and manage their conditions while waiting for treatment.
Dee embraced the Hope Programme with a mix of anxiety and determination. She diligently documented her progress in a journal, reflecting on her mental wellbeing scores. Starting with a low score of 20, Dee's journey with the Hope Programme led to improvements in her outlook and quality of life.
Week 1: Dee started with a sense of anxiety but was hopeful for a positive change. Her mental wellbeing score was initially low, reflecting her struggles.
Week 2: Focused on managing pain, Dee learned that she didn't have to resign herself to a life of pain. This realization was a pivotal moment in her journey.
Week 3: With a goal to regain confidence in walking, Dee planned short walks around her village, rewarding herself with a relaxing bath and a cup of tea.
Week 4: Dee's mental wellbeing score improved to an average level of 26. She began to enjoy short walks and appreciated the beauty of nature.
Week 8: By the end of the programme, Dee's mental wellbeing score soared to 28, reflecting good mental health. She set her sights on future adventures, dreaming of climbing Golden Cap in Dorset and watching the sunrise at the harbour in Staithes.
One of the most valuable aspects of the Hope Programme for Dee was the sense of community. Attending weekly Hope Cafe sessions allowed her to connect with others who truly understood her struggles. Sharing experiences and encouragement with peers gave Dee a newfound sense of belonging and hope.
Dee completed all eight sessions of the Hope Programme, earning badges and a completer certificate along the way. She set goals, practiced gratitude, and embraced physical activity, breathing exercises, and meditation as part of her routine. Although concerned about access to resources if her surgery is delayed, Dee is committed to maintaining the positive changes she has made.
