“By managing your mental wellbeing early, you’re ready when life throws challenges your way”

— Lewis Jeffrey, Watch Manager, Greater Manchester

Improving wellbeing of the fire family

Since 2021, Hope 4 The Community CIC and Fire Fighters Charity have worked in partnership to deliver the Hope Programme for fire and rescue service personnel, retired staff and family members across the UK.
The programme offers evidence-based support to help people manage stress, anxiety and change, while building confidence, wellbeing and connection with others. It complements the Charity’s 1: 1 mental health provision and has been a vital resource for fire and rescue service personnel and families, offering support finding ways of coping with stress and anxiety through challenging times.
Starting with 3 pilot courses, the programme has now reached over 2,444 participants across 60 fire and rescue services. It supports more than 600 people each year and has expanded to include support for carers, parents of children with complex needs, and people preparing for or adjusting to retirement.

The courses have been co-designed with fire service personnel and families and funded by Fire Fighters Charity.

Our ongoing evaluation shows positive impact on mental wellbeing, physical wellbeing and social connection.

Impact to date

From Bobby Lennox, Scottish Station Commander and Hope Programme participant

“In Scotland there’s still a macho culture with people not asking for help until it’s too late. I wanted to get involved, learn about it and encourage colleagues to take part in it too.”

Take the wheel of your wellbeing

Life can throw up bumps in the road – stress at work, shifts in family life, major changes, or times when you just feel a bit lost.

Self-management is beneficial in helping to improve health and wellbeing. If you are the kind of person who benefits from the support of others the Hope Programme is ideal for you. HOPE facilitators go through a training programme but more importantly they are part of the fire service.

Life can be tough, but you don’t have to wait until you’re struggling to take action. Connect with others in similar situations, learn practical tools, and get back in the driving seat of your wellbeing – starting today.

There are two options available, one for all service users, and another focused on retirement:

  • For service users

    • Strengthen relationships and communication

    • Practice mindfulness to stay balanced

  • For retirement

    • Get ready for and maintain wellness in your retirement – whatever stage you may be at.

    • Prepare for retirement with more confidence

    • Plan for the changes and challenges ahead

    • Stay connected and find new purpose

    • Protect your health and build on your strengths
